Artist Interview / Critique

In art class, we are in our final week for the Character Nichos project. I want to have my students do another critique, because I feel that critiques are really superb closure activities, especially for long projects. Critiques help students give deeper thought to their work and to the work of other students.

In an earlier project, self-portrait collages, I had students do an artist’s statement after a verbal critique. This time I’m going to try another approach.

First I will have each student interview another artist in class. The interviewer will have a prompt sheet and will be expected to write down the responses (no swapping papers so that the interviewee writes it all down – I know some will try this!) If there are an odd number in class, three will group together; artist 1 will interview artist 2, artist 2 will interview artist 3, and artist 3 will interview – you guessed it – artist 1.

Then on the back of the sheet is the critique portion. Students will give individual responses to their own works as well as to the works of others.

Artist Interview / Art Critique worksheet. I will share this as an overhead tomorrow to prepare the kids ahead of time for some serious critical analysis. Then the students will get the handouts to complete when the projects are finished, perhaps Thursday or early next week.

The text is below:

UNITY: All of the parts of the artwork work together to achieve a common result.

Artist Interview

When all of the artists’ work is on display, including your own, interview another artist. Take a good look at his/her artwork. Ask him/her the questions below and write down the answers using clear writing. Each interviewer will share one of the answers below with the whole class.

Interviewee Artist Name
1. What is the theme of your artwork?
2. How did you use line, shape and form in your artwork?
3. How did you use color, value and texture in your artwork?
4. How did you achieve unity in your artwork?
5. What was your experience like in making this artwork?
6. What would you have done if you had had more time?

Critique

Now take a look at all of the artworks on display for this project. Answer the questions below about your artwork and the works of others.

1. Whose artwork achieves unity best? Explain why.
2. If you were a curator and you could buy one of these artworks for the collection of your museum, which one would it be? Why?
3. In talking about your own work of art, how closely does the end result match what you had in mind to create?
4. Explain why you chose the images, objects, and colors you did for your artwork.

Things Students Do That Secretly Crack Me Up, Part 8

Middle school art class, just before period 2 begins. A school secretary begins an announcement over the AP system. In the middle of her sentence, the tardy bell rings and she is no longer audible.

8th-grade Girl: Hahaha! She has a potty mouth!
