Escape to Alcatraz
Escape to Alcatraz, 1985

"I first met Petie at the Dolphin Club in 78/79 or so. The picture is from the 'Over 40 Women's Relay' for the 'Escape from Alcatraz' in Oct. '85. Flicka McGurrin is the biker for the leg from Aquatic Park to Mill Valley; Petie the runner of the Double Dipsea; I'm the swimmer from the Rock to Aquatic Park. Background is Susanna Spencer Horner who was the pilot for the swim. Petie's time for the Double Dipsea was 2:51:00 - super runner - and great fun. Petie wanted to know when Flicka was going to change into her bike clothes (please note the gold moccasins) but that was the outfit for the ride. Our total time was 4:34:00.

"Petie did the first 'Escape' in July, 1981 in a total time of 6:24:18 - swim, bike and run." - Susan Allen

Dipsea 1967
Petie at the Dipsea race, 1967

"[This] picture I scanned of Petie was taken by Travis Cart of the Independent Journal. It was taken in 1967 at Lytton Square in downtown Mill Valley at the start of the Dipsea Race. It is near the bus depot. The Dipsea back then was a 6.8 mile course of just rugged terrain. Petie was, of course, wearing her tennis attire. Petie was the only female runner. While still "unofficial," she was credited with coming in 159th in the results. She ran 1:18:47 with a 15 minute handicap. I got my information from Barry Spitz who is the author of the Dipsea Book. This picture is from Spitz's book. Barry is the true historian of the race and he will be saddened by the news of Petie."

Dipsea 1967
Petie, top center, c. 1972

"Not sure what race or year this is... probably somewhere between 1972-75. Two of the kids are wearing West Valley Marathon shirts from the 1972 race (in Feb.,) so this might be the same year. Petie obviously won the women's division (there was probably only one age-division or maybe only one or a few women running.) Some of those I recognize:
BACK l-r: Skip Houk, Jim Howell, Petie, Greg Chapman, ?? (probably the race director;)
FRONT l-r: ??, T.A. de Lusignan, Keith Campbell, Jim O'Neill, ??"
